Why this date - the science
Astronomically, spring equinox - the day length finally equals night length. The earth enters its rebirth-phase. Traditional Holi colours were made from PALASHA + HALDI + KUMKUM + indigo - all natural plant-pigments with mild antiseptic + skin-cleansing properties.
Ayurvedic wisdom
Spring (kapha-aggravating season). Holi colours, originally medicinal: turmeric (anti-bacterial, anti-fungal), neem-leaves (skin-cleansing), palasha (kapha-balancing). Bonfire (Holika Dahan) eve + dancing all day = exactly the spring-detox the body needs. The bhang (cannabis-paste) drink - used sparingly - is a Holi-specific Ayurveda formulation.
