The seven mantra-drashtas through whom the Veda flowed to mankind. Every brahmana\'s gotra traces back to one of these seven — or to a derivative rishi (the Bhrigu-Angiras-Kashyapa-Bharadvaja lineages are the largest). In the night sky, the seven brightest stars of the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) are the visible form of these seven. Below: full bio of each + the seven grades of rishi + the constellation map.
Birth — Son of Marichi (mind-born son of Brahma).
Consort — Aditi (mother of Adityas including Vishnu), Diti (mother of Daityas), Kadru (mother of Nagas), Vinata (mother of Garuda) — 13 wives total.
Lineage — Through Aditi: the 12 Adityas (Vishnu, Surya, Indra, Vamana). Through Diti: Hiranyakashipu + Hiranyaksha. Through Kadru: the serpents. Through Vinata: Garuda. Through other wives: virtually all the beings of the cosmos.
Contribution — Father of devas, asuras, nagas, garudas — virtually all creation traces back to Kashyapa. The very name "Kashmir" derives from "Kashyapa-mira" (Kashyapa's lake).
Mantras / texts — Several Rig Veda mantras (1.99, 9.114, etc).
Gotras descending — Kashyapa gotra — one of the most common brahmana gotras. Vishvakarmas, several brahmana sub-castes claim Kashyapa.
Birth — Mind-born son of Brahma.
Consort — Anasuya (paragon of pativrata).
Lineage — Sons: Soma (the moon-god), Dattatreya (combined avatar of Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva), Durvasa (the angry sage). Disciples: Krishna and Pandavas honoured them.
Contribution — Author of many Rig Veda hymns. His wife Anasuya converted the Trimurti themselves into infants when they tested her pativrata — they were born as Dattatreya. The Mahabharata names Atri as one of the four "wisdom-keepers".
Mantras / texts — Rig Veda Mandala 5 (the "Atri mandala") — 87 hymns. Atri Smriti.
Gotras descending — Atri gotra. The pravara is "Atreya".
Birth — Mind-born son of Brahma (also said to be born from Mitra-Varuna).
Consort — Arundhati (the morning star — the only saptarshi consort herself enshrined as a star).
Lineage — Sons: Shakti and others (100 sons killed by Vishvamitra; later restored). Disciple: Sri Rama. Long-time rival of Vishvamitra in the famous Vasishtha-Vishvamitra cycle.
Contribution — Royal preceptor (raja-purohit) of the Ikshvaku dynasty including Sri Rama. Wrote the Vasishtha Smriti + Yoga-Vasishtha (his teaching to Rama on Vedanta). Survived multiple attacks by Vishvamitra including the killing of all 100 of his sons — yet forgave when Vishvamitra finally became a brahmarishi.
Mantras / texts — Rig Veda Mandala 7 (the "Vasishtha mandala") — 104 hymns. The Yoga-Vasishtha (32,000-verse Vedanta classic).
Gotras descending — Vasishtha gotra. The pravara is "Vasishtha".
Birth — Born a kshatriya — King Kaushika of Kanyakubja. Earned brahmarishi status through severe tapas spanning thousands of years.
Consort — Many — including the celestial Menaka (sent by Indra to break his tapas; daughter Shakuntala resulted).
Lineage — Daughter Shakuntala — Bharata's mother (from whom Bharata-varsha is named). Numerous disciples including Sri Rama (whom he initiated and gave the Gayatri mantra to).
Contribution — The seer of the Gayatri mantra — the single most-recited mantra of Sanatana Dharma. The only person in history to ascend from kshatriya to brahmarishi (highest grade of rishi) through tapas alone. Initiated Rama into the science of weapons before Rama's slaying of Tataka.
Mantras / texts — Rig Veda Mandala 3 (the "Vishvamitra mandala") — including 3.62.10, the Gayatri mantra. Also the Mahanaranayan Upanishad attribution.
Gotras descending — Kaushika gotra. Modern Kaushiks descend from Vishvamitra.
Birth — Son of Rishi Dirghatamas.
Consort — Ahalya — the first woman fashioned by Brahma, of incomparable beauty.
Lineage — Son: Shatananda (royal priest of Janaka). Through his daughter, many lineages.
Contribution — The cursed-Ahalya story: Indra disguised himself as Gautama to seduce Ahalya. When Gautama discovered the deception, he cursed Indra (sahasra-yoni = a thousand female-marks on his body) and Ahalya (turn to stone until purified by Rama's touch). Rama later restored Ahalya en route to Mithila. Author of the Nyaya darshana.
Mantras / texts — Rig Veda hymns (1.62, 1.63). Author of the Nyaya Sutras (founding text of Nyaya darshana) and Dharma-sutra.

Birth — Son of Rishi Ruchika and Satyavati (princess of Kanyakubja).
Consort — Renuka (daughter of King Renuka of Ikshvaku).
Lineage — Most famous son: Parashurama (the 6th avatar of Vishnu). Other sons: Rumanvan, Sushena, Vasu, Vishvavasu.
Contribution — The Parashurama story: Jamadagni's kamadhenu (wish-cow) was stolen by King Karta-virya-arjuna. Parashurama avenged his father by killing the king. The king's sons then killed Jamadagni — at which Parashurama vowed to rid the earth of kshatriyas 21 times. The mother Renuka, who briefly lost concentration, was beheaded by Parashurama at Jamadagni's command — then restored. Renuka is worshipped today as Yellamma in Karnataka.
Mantras / texts — Rig Veda hymns. The Bhargavas (Jamadagni was of Bhrigu lineage) are credited with major portions of the Atharva Veda.
Gotras descending — Jamadagni gotra (within the Bhargava pravara). Bhargava gotra families today trace to him + his ancestor Bhrigu.
Birth — Son of Brihaspati (preceptor of devas) and Mamata.

The seven brightest stars of Ursa Major are identified with the seven rishis. The faint companion star Alcor (next to Mizar/Vasishtha) is Arundhati — Vasishtha's wife. Showing this pair to the bride and groom at marriage is the highest auspice — modelling pativrata + dharmic husband.
