The Mahabharata is the longest epic of human literature — 100,000+ shlokas across 18 parvas. 15 central characters profiled below — each with birth, feats, manner of death, and the dharmic lesson embodied. Plus a day-by-day map of the 18-day Kurukshetra war.
DAY 1
Bhagavad Gita + Bhishma's command
Arjuna's vishada at the sight of relatives in the enemy ranks. Krishna delivers the 18-chapter Bhagavad Gita on the battlefield. Bhishma takes command of the Kaurava army.
Outcome — Pandavas suffer heavy losses. Uttara (Virata's son) slain.
DAY 2
Pandava counter-offensive
Arjuna engaged with Bhishma. Drona's contingent slowed.
Outcome — Pandavas regain ground. Kaurava losses heavy.
DAY 3
Eagle formation
Bhishma formed Garuda-vyuha. Arjuna formed Ardha-Chandra (half-moon) in response.
Outcome — Bhishma killed Krishna's horses; Krishna nearly took up his Sudarshana Chakra in fury but was restrained by Arjuna.
DAY 4
Bhima's rampage
Bhima killed 8 of Duryodhana's brothers (Ananda-vapur, Subhru, etc) in one day.
Outcome — Duryodhana fainted with grief — first time in war.
DAY 5
Krauncha-vyuha
Bhishma formed crane-formation. Yudhishthira matched with Shyena-vyuha (hawk).
Outcome — Heavy mutual casualties. Bhishma still untouchable.
DAY 6
Bhima vs Drona
Bhima engaged Drona. Pandavas formed Makara (crocodile) vyuha; Kauravas formed Krauncha.
Outcome — Bhima's charioteer killed but Bhima continued unhurt.
DAY 7
Mandala vyuha
Bhishma formed Mandala (circular) vyuha. Yudhishthira formed Vajra-vyuha.
Outcome — Drupada's archers heavy losses. Several major Kaurava warriors killed.
DAY 8
Ghatotkacha enters
Bhima's rakshasa son Ghatotkacha entered the field. Iravan (Arjuna's naga-son) killed by Alambusha rakshasa.
Outcome — Iravan slain; Ghatotkacha pushed Kaurava lines back.
DAY 9
Arjuna's reluctance
Bhishma slaughtering Pandava soldiers. Krishna himself dismounted again, ready to take up the chakra — Arjuna stopped him by promising to fight Bhishma full-force.
Outcome — Bhishma still standing despite Arjuna's assault.
DAY 10
BHISHMA FALLS
Pandavas asked Bhishma the night before how he could be slain. He said: "I will not raise weapons against a woman or a former-woman." Shikhandi (Amba reborn as female-then-male) led the attack; Arjuna shot from behind Shikhandi. Bhishma fell on a bed of arrows.
Outcome — Bhishma fallen but alive (icchamrityu — chose to wait for Uttarayana to die). Drona takes command Day 11.
DAY 11
Drona's command begins
Drona attempted to capture Yudhishthira. Arjuna pulled away by Samshaptakas (suicide-warriors who vowed to die or kill Arjuna).
Outcome — Drona failed to capture Yudhishthira. Heavy fighting.
DAY 12
Drona's Trigarta strategy
Drona prepared the Padma-vyuha (lotus formation) for Day 13. Bhagadatta (king of Pragjyotisha on his elephant Supratika) attacked Arjuna with the Vaishnava-astra — Krishna absorbed it.
Outcome — Bhagadatta killed by Arjuna. Susharma's 4 brothers killed.
DAY 13
ABHIMANYU SLAIN
Drona formed the Chakravyuha. Arjuna away fighting Samshaptakas. Abhimanyu (16, knew how to enter but not exit) broke in — slew countless Kauravas, including Lakshmana (Duryodhana's son). Surrounded by Karna, Drona, Kripa, Ashwatthama, Duryodhana, Kritavarma, Jayadratha — killed against all shastra-yuddha rules.
Outcome — Abhimanyu dead. Arjuna vowed to slay Jayadratha by sunset Day 14 or self-immolate.
DAY 14
JAYADRATHA SLAIN
Krishna covered the sun with his Sudarshana Chakra at the critical moment, tricking the Kauravas into thinking sunset. Jayadratha revealed himself — Arjuna shot off his head. Night-fighting (against shastra-yuddha) continued. Ghatotkacha unleashed nightmare-rakshasa-warfare; Karna used his Vasava-shakti spear (saved for Arjuna) on Ghatotkacha — saving Arjuna for later.
Outcome — Jayadratha + Ghatotkacha dead. Karna disarmed of his Indra-spear.
DAY 15
DRONA FALLS
Drona blazing — could not be stopped. Krishna suggested: tell Drona his son Ashwatthama is dead. Yudhishthira (who never lied) reluctantly said: "Ashwatthama hata, kunjarah" — "Ashwatthama is dead — an elephant." Krishna ordered loud trumpets to drown out "kunjarah". Drona dropped weapons in grief. Dhrishtadyumna beheaded him.
Outcome — Drona dead. Karna takes command Day 16.
DAY 16
Karna's command
Karna's first day as commander. Heavy losses to Pandavas. Karna killed Sahadeva's and Nakula's charioteer but spared their lives (per Kunti's plea — he'd sworn to spare 4 Pandavas + only kill Arjuna).
Outcome — Pandava losses mount. Karna ascendant.
DAY 17
KARNA FALLS
Karna vs Arjuna in extended duel. Karna's chariot wheel sank into the mud (Bhumi-curse + Parashurama-curse). He stepped down to lift it. Krishna told Arjuna: "This is your moment — kill him." Arjuna shot Karna while he was unarmed. Karna dropped, the half-Pandava brother dead.
Outcome — Karna dead. Shalya takes command Day 18.
DAY 18
DURYODHANA FALLS — war ends
Shalya killed by Yudhishthira. Sahadeva killed Shakuni (the dice-master). Remaining Kauravas killed except Duryodhana, Ashwatthama, Kripa, Kritavarma. Duryodhana fled to the Vaishampayana lake + hid under water. Bhima found him — challenged to mace-duel. Bhima broke Duryodhana's thigh below the waist — adharmic blow that Krishna had ordered. Duryodhana lay dying.
Outcome — War over. Pandavas victorious. But that night Ashwatthama crept into the Pandava camp and slaughtered the 5 sons of Draupadi + Dhrishtadyumna + Shikhandi — the Sauptika Parva tragedy.
