Mahabharata deep — characters + Kurukshetra war

Birth — Son of Kunti by mantra-invoked Yama (god of death + dharma).

Feats — Performed Rajasuya yajna (asserting overlordship of Bharatavarsha). Answered Yaksha's 36 questions, restoring his 4 brothers. Never told a deliberate lie until forced to half-truth (Ashwatthama-hata, kunjarah) on the 15th day of war — which dropped his chariot from its hovering height. Coronated emperor after war.

Death — After Krishna's departure, walked north on the Mahaprasthana (the great departure). Reached Mt. Sumeru. Refused to abandon his dog (Yama in disguise) for heaven. Granted physical entry to Svarga.

Lesson — Dharma-raja — even one falsehood corrupts the dharmic. Compassion to the lowliest (the dog) is supreme.

Birth — Son of Kunti by mantra-invoked Vayu (god of wind). Had the strength of 10,000 elephants.

Feats — Slew Bakasura (1-village-1-cartful-of-food demon) at Ekachakra. Killed Hidimba + married his sister Hidimbi (their son: Ghatotkacha). Killed Jarasandha by tearing him in half (Mathura's long-standing enemy). Avenged Draupadi by tearing Dushasana's chest + drinking his blood. Broke Duryodhana's thigh in the final mace-fight (Day 18).

Death — On Mahaprasthana — fell first because of his gluttony.

Lesson — Strength when channelled to dharma is invincible. Anger has its place — Draupadi's humiliation could not go unavenged.

Birth — Son of Kunti by mantra-invoked Indra. Indra's spiritual son.

Feats — Won Draupadi by hitting the rotating-fish-eye at her swayamvara. Acquired the Gandiva bow + Pashupatastra from Shiva. Studied with Drona (the supreme dhanur-vidya master). Krishna's charioteer + recipient of the Bhagavad Gita. Slew Bhishma, Karna, and most of the major Kaurava warriors. Performed the Ashwamedha-yajna after the war.

Death — On Mahaprasthana, fell second — because of pride in his bow.

Lesson — Skill + devotion to the divine teacher (Krishna). The pre-eminent kshatriya, but never independent — always Krishna's instrument.

Birth — Born from fire — emerged from King Drupada's yajna at Panchala. Drupada had asked Yaja + Upayaja for a son to kill Drona; the daughter (Draupadi) was the unsought boon. Also incarnation of Sri-devi.

Feats — Married all 5 Pandavas (per Vyasa's direction — fulfilling her past-life vara to Shiva for 5 husbands). Endured dice-game humiliation but vowed not to tie her hair until she could bathe it in Dushasana's blood. Insulted Karna at her swayamvara (which fuelled his hatred). Insulted Duryodhana at the Indraprastha palace ("the blind man's son is also blind") — fuel for the war.

Death — On Mahaprasthana, fell first among siblings — because of partiality to Arjuna over the other 4 husbands.

Lesson — Insulted dharma cannot rest until restored. A woman's honour is the dharma-axis around which the entire war revolved.

Birth — Eldest of the 100 sons of Dhritarashtra + Gandhari. Born from a mass-of-flesh (from Gandhari's 2-year pregnancy), split by Vyasa into 100 + 1 daughter parts and incubated in ghee-pots for 2 years.

Feats — Schemed against the Pandavas from childhood. Inherited the Kaurava kingdom + tried to assassinate the Pandavas in the lacquer-house (Lakshagriha). Engineered the dice-game humiliation of Draupadi. Refused Krishna's peace-mission ("not a needle-tip of land"). Master of mace-fight (gada-yuddha).

Death — On the 18th day, Bhima broke his thigh in the mace-duel — a kshatriya-unfair blow. Lay dying at the Vaishampayana lake.

Lesson — Ego unchecked devours. Refused EVERY peaceful path — even Krishna's personal mission of mediation.

Birth — Son of Kunti by Surya — born BEFORE her marriage when she mantra-invoked Surya (using a boon-mantra from Sage Durvasa to test it). Born with armour + earrings. Abandoned in a basket on the Ganga. Raised by Adhiratha + Radha (charioteer caste) — hence "Radheya".

Feats — Unbreakable kavacha + kundala (armour + earrings) at birth — Indra tricked him into giving them to him for the Vasava-shakti spear. Best archer arguably ahead of Arjuna. Eternal friend of Duryodhana — accepted his patronage as "Ang-raja" (king of Anga). On the eve of war, told by Krishna + Kunti that he was the eldest Pandava; refused to switch sides out of loyalty.

Death — On Day 17 of war. His chariot wheel stuck in mud (per Parashurama's curse) — Arjuna shot him while he was lifting the wheel, against shastra-vidhi. Krishna had directed Arjuna to do so.

Lesson — The tragic hero. Loyalty above dharma is itself adharma. Yet his charity (he never refused any request — gave away his armour, his earrings, even his accumulated punya) is exemplary.

Birth — Son of Ganga + Shantanu. Originally named Devavrata. Took the terrible vow (bhishana-pratijna — hence "Bhishma") of lifelong celibacy + service to whoever ruled Hastinapura, so that his stepmother Satyavati's sons could inherit.

Feats — Boon of icchamrityu (death at will) from his father. Defeated Parashurama in single combat. Carried off Amba, Ambika, Ambalika as brides for his half-brother. Amba's curse-rebirth as Shikhandi caused his fall. Commander-in-chief of Kaurava army for first 10 days.

Death — Day 10 — Shikhandi (who he refused to fight as a woman) stood before Arjuna, who shot Bhishma down behind him with thousands of arrows. Lay on the bed of arrows for 58 nights, waiting for Uttarayana to die. Delivered the entire Shanti Parva + Anushasana Parva from this bed.

Lesson — A vow may be terrible — but a man of vow is bound by it even unto death. Bhishma chose Hastinapura over dharma (he could see Krishna was right, yet fought for Duryodhana).

Birth — Born of Sage Bharadvaja (his name = "born in a vessel"). Brahmana by caste, master of all weapons.

Feats — Acharya to both Pandavas + Kauravas. Asked Drupada for half the kingdom in exchange for friendship — was insulted, then later sent Arjuna to defeat Drupada. Cut off Eklavya's right thumb as guru-dakshina (so Arjuna would remain the best archer). Commander-in-chief Days 11-15.

Death — On Day 15, on hearing the (technically true) report of "Ashwatthama hata" (Ashwatthama killed — but Bhima had killed an elephant of that name) + Yudhishthira's reluctant confirmation, Drona dropped his weapons in grief. Dhrishtadyumna (Drupada's son, born to slay Drona) beheaded him.

Lesson — Even an acharya can serve the wrong side out of patronage. Drona knew Duryodhana's cause was unjust, yet fought for him.

Birth — Eighth son of Devaki + Vasudeva, born in Kamsa's prison cell. Foster-raised by Nanda + Yashoda at Gokul. Established Dwaraka. By the time of Mahabharata: middle-aged king of the Yadavas + the supreme strategist.

Feats — Brokered the peace-mission (failed). Switched the bow + arrow side — gave Duryodhana his Narayani-Sena (massive army) but himself was unarmed, on the Pandava side as Arjuna's charioteer. Delivered the Bhagavad Gita on the first day of war. Engineered every major Pandava victory through subtle adharma — the killing of Bhishma, Drona, Karna, Duryodhana — all involved technical violations of shastra-yuddha rules.

Death — After 36 years of post-war rule at Dwaraka, his Yadava clan annihilated itself in a brawl (per Gandhari's curse for Krishna's "not stopping the war"). Krishna sat in meditation under a tree; the hunter Jara mistook his foot for a deer and shot him.

Lesson — The supreme strategist of dharma. Sometimes dharma requires breaking the letter of rules to preserve the spirit. "Sukshma dharma" — subtle dharma.

Birth — Half-brother of Dhritarashtra + Pandu — born of a maidservant (Parishrami) by Vyasa. Considered an incarnation of Dharma-deva.

Feats — Chief counsellor of Hastinapura through 3 generations. Warned Yudhishthira about the dice-game. Refused to attend after the dishonour of Draupadi. Sided with the Pandavas in the war but did not fight (a brahmana).

Death — After the war, retired to the forest with Dhritarashtra + Gandhari + Kunti — all 4 perished in a forest fire after Krishna's departure.

Lesson — The lowly-born can possess the highest dharma. Vidura is the conscience of the entire epic.

Birth — Son of Gavalgana, charioteer-cum-bard at the Hastinapura court.

Feats — Granted divya-drishti (divine sight) by Vyasa — could see + hear the entire Kurukshetra war from the palace. Narrated all 18 days to the blind Dhritarashtra. This narration IS the Bhagavad Gita + the entire Bhishma-Drona-Karna-Shalya-Sauptika parvas.

Death — After the war, retired to the forest along with Dhritarashtra.

Lesson — The reporter/witness of dharma. Without Sanjaya, we would not have the Bhagavad Gita.

Birth — Son of Arjuna + Subhadra (Krishna's sister). Learned the chakravyuha-entry while in Subhadra's womb (overheard Arjuna teaching it) — but not the exit, because Subhadra fell asleep.

Feats — On Day 13, only 16 years old, broke into the Kaurava chakravyuha. Killed countless warriors including Lakshmana (Duryodhana's son). Trapped because he did not know the exit. Surrounded by 7 maha-ratha warriors simultaneously (against shastra-yuddha) and killed.

Death — Day 13. Provoked Arjuna's vow to slay Jayadratha by sunset of Day 14 — fulfilled.

Lesson — The unfinished hero. Incomplete knowledge has tragic consequences. His grandson Parikshit continued the Pandava line.

Birth — Daughter of Shurasena (Vasudeva's father — making her Krishna's aunt). Adopted by King Kuntibhoja — hence "Kunti".

Feats — Received a mantra-boon from Sage Durvasa to invoke any deva for a son. Tested by invoking Surya — bore Karna (whom she abandoned). After marriage to Pandu, bore Yudhishthira (by Yama), Bhima (by Vayu), Arjuna (by Indra). Pandu requested a son for Madri — Kunti shared the mantra; Madri invoked the Ashwins for Nakula + Sahadeva.

Death — In the forest with Dhritarashtra after the war — perished in the forest fire.

Lesson — The mother who set in motion both armies. Her secret of Karna (which she revealed only on the eve of war) is the supreme tragic node.

Birth — Princess of Gandhara (modern Kandahar). Married Dhritarashtra. Voluntarily blindfolded herself in solidarity with her blind husband — never saw the world for the rest of her life.

Feats — Mother of the 100 Kauravas + 1 daughter (Duhshala). On the eve of the war, asked Duryodhana to come to her without garments so she could empower his body — Krishna intervened by making Duryodhana cover his loins — leaving the thigh vulnerable (which Bhima later broke).

Death — Cursed Krishna for not preventing the war — said his Yadava clan would self-annihilate within 36 years (which it did). Perished in the forest fire alongside Dhritarashtra + Kunti + Vidura.

Lesson — Pativrata taken to absurdity — her blindfold made her unable to discipline her sons. The Mahabharata's critique: vows must serve dharma, not blindly replace it.

Birth — Son of Sage Parashara + Satyavati (the fisherwoman-princess). Born on an island (Krishna-Dvaipayana). Through niyoga, fathered Dhritarashtra (with Ambika) + Pandu (with Ambalika) + Vidura (with maidservant Parishrami) — hence the BIOLOGICAL grandfather of all the Kauravas + Pandavas.

Feats — Compiler of the 4 Vedas. Author of the Mahabharata (which he dictated to Ganesha — Ganesha's broken-tusk pen). Author of the 18 Mahapuranas + Brahma Sutras + Bhagavata Purana. Considered an avatar of Vishnu.

Death — Chiranjivi (eternal). Said to still walk the earth — encountered by Adi Shankara, Madhva, etc.

Lesson — The author who is also the grandfather — Vyasa wrote his own descendants' war into being. The supreme paramarshi.
